While the Project pages don't specifically say all the reasons why an auto-built image won't work, it should be realized that LEDE is no longer recommended for these devices, due to low flash space and low RAM.

There are various wikis on how to add ram (and perhaps, flash) to such a device - what would need to be done to compile for it, etc. Those are extremely advanced and require soldering (and perhaps editing code before compile).

I'm not sure of why the old wiki is being used. I'm rather interested because I also use the WRT54G series of devices, some devices had little space to spare after flashing.

Lastly, there is a line in the new wiki that states:

4MB can work, but are no fun to work with

I concur with this.

  * Have you tried doing a full clear of your settings on the old OS before flashing?
  * You mentioned that you couldn't upload, what was the exact error message you received?
  * Have you tried all procedures outlined in upgrading https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/generic.sysupgrade (e.g. using command line, and uninstalling LuCI)?
  * Also, if this doesn't work, you may want to compile a version without LuCI.

Working as-is on: WRT54G v3, WRT54GS
