The proper fix is to add PKG_MIRROR_HASH to ensure that (once buildbot has picked up the package once) it never has to actually do the git clone anymore. That way it can download the tarball from the LEDE mirror site.
Aside from that, any issues/pull-requests on packages like that should be opened at https://github.com/openwrt/packages
