As long as the datasheet doesn't say that this particular chip needs more than 50ms to reset, it is a workaround and ugly one on top.

It isn't different to adding sleeps to workaround race conditions. Might work at the moment but will break sooner or later. As long as it isn't a hardware limitation, I prefer to get the underlying issue fixed instead.
