Yes it is related to the missing hardware acceleration.

If you boot the TP-Link firmware, login via serial console and disable the hardware acceleration (echo disable > /proc/ppa/api/hook), you will end up with the same nat/routing throughput as with LEDE.

I tend to close this ticket as "deferred". I'm somehow in doubt that somebody picks up the work and implements hardware acceleration. Especially since there is no public available documentation for lantiq hardware.
