Okay, I got the adapter and now I feel very stupid :D

Turns out there is no corruption issue at all. On first boot when rootfs is saved JFFS2 performs some king of flash cleaning. Flash module on this device is _very_ slow, so it takes around three minutes for it to complete. All this time router has IP address 192.168.1.1, blinks power LED and has TFTP server started. This very closely resembles ASUS recovery mode, and indeed, when I sent the firmware over TFTP, after some time the router booted! Only -- this was completely unrelated to me putting something via TFTP, it was JFFS2 doing its job.

Sorry for the noise! The only thing I suppose can be improved is this to be noted in some kind of documentation to prevent further confusion.
