The problem is I used sysupgrade to reflash from OpenWrt CC.

I have worked round this by removing the CF card and mounting on my laptop where I deleted existing partitions then flashed the image using DD. It now works perfectly as far as I can see so far.

Is this issue likely to be unique to the x86 image?

The next item on my list is to try a Ubiquiti AirGateway where the only options are sysupgrade or tftp.
