A new info:
After I've compiled the firmware without transmission I was able to compile transmission package alone with
make package/feeds/packages/transmission/compile

Excited with success I've cleaned the package, included it through menuconfig and tried to recompile the firmware with the package... alas no success with the above error message.

Then without cleaning the staging status of broken compilation I've tried to compile transmission alone again and... it failed. Cleaned the package alone and recompiled - failed again.

Seems that there's some wrong env is set during the firmware compilation and cleaned on success.

Anyway I'm trying to figure the commit that brought this issue.
