[FS#197] Unable to flash new image on mvebu

Details - Starting with kernel 4.4.22 it has not been possible to flash a new image. Currently have r1727 4.4.23 kernel on mamba and cannot successfully flash a new image. Going back to partition with 4.4.21 image works. Upon attempt /usr/sbin looks:
FYI on the reported inability to flash a new image from 4.4.22, 4.4.23 lede build. I have flashed r1727-4.4.23 with current kernel patch-set and I am unable to flash a new image. The /usr/sbin directory look thus:

after an attempt that aborts. A reboot restores, but you cannot move forward, at leat in that manner.

reboot restore things, but of course requiesite tools to accomplish rewrite are not to be found.

As a datapoint no issues with c7v2.
