Hi John, according to Stijn it isn't just a kernel option. A patchset not even in mainline is required.
Following an **excerpt** of the #lede-dev log from 10.09.2016. It should explain why I requested the ticket to be closed.
21:46:17 < tete_> i just wanted to report that sfp is not included in the kernel when i use the latest nightly image for the clearfog pro a1
21:56:05 < tete_> is it so hard to understand that someone who builds the kernel has to check the checkbox for sfp support?!
23:10:26 < stintel> tete_: https://lwn.net/Articles/667055/
23:10:51 < stintel> this is not in linux git even, so definitely not in 4.4, which means it's not just "checking a checkbox
23:25:11 < stintel> tete_: you could try downloading the patches from https://patchwork.ozlabs.org/project/netdev/list/?submitter=13647&state=5&q=&archive=&delegate= and throwing them in target/linux/mvebu/patches-4.4/ , don't forget the DT changes, add new kernel config symbols etc
23:25:25 < stintel> and then build your own image, and if it works, send a PR to LEDE
