Yep, major weird weirdness with sysupgrade since about a month ago. I thought it's a Xiaomi MiWiFi Mini quirk, but it may be related to the recent ramips image generation changes. Anyway, making a backup, then running sysupgrade -f backup.tgz lede-ramips-mt7620-*-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin, seems to work better. It does take much longer (5-10 mins?) for the upgrade to complete. Also, my other rt305x-based device has no such issues.
