The default configuration of LEDE does not contain SSL support (no libustream-* package is installed), and on small routers, users often want to use the limited space for other packages and avoid installing a SSL library. In addition, using HTTPS would have no benefits in regard to integrity (but only confidentiality), as the package lists are already cryptographically signed.

You can modify the base path of the opkg repos in your .config (option CONFIG_VERSION_REPO, "Release repository" in menuconfig), but in my opinion, this should not become the default.
