Thank you Mathias for troubleshooting my issue.

Had a similar problem, I received my EA8500 with 1.1.4.173728 and assumed it has at least 1.1.4.169978 on another partition (as it's required for upgrade according to Linksys), so I did not follow wiki and did not flash stock image again to ensure both partitions are LEDE compatible.

What Mathias suggested and what helped me was to run sysupgrade -F -n with the LEDE factory image. That converted my other partition to the LEDE compatible format and I can now do sysupgrade with upgrade image.
