It does seem like such a universal issue that perhaps the discussion in reference to this particular product / driver driver is what is wrong here.

The port ordering on various platforms comes up as a frequent issue, and while all mention of chip registers is valid, and as far as I know there are no (ok, very few) chip "users", mostly product users; at the moment the abstraction having to generally happen in the user's head with reference to a datasheet / schematic which in this case at least they will never see.  A scheme for abstraction is perhaps what is really needed.

I will do the test above and report back.
