How to get WPA status asynchronously

I'm using wpa_supplicant via hostapd and I can't figure out how to get WPA status changes asynchronously. Right now I'm polling for status periodically with a timer. hostapd has a mechanism to register a callback to receive "unsolicited messages" and I have done so but I don't get any callbacks and I'm not sure what type of notices I should expect via that mechanism anyway. Searching the web for some hours yesterday didn't turn up any ideas. Thanks.
