scan_ssid=1 is the best way of doing that, but you would need to use the
nl80211 driver interface. In practice, I would not even bother trying to
make this work with WEXT (it's been obsolete for years..) and
wpa_supplicat 0.7.3 is indeed old, so if you want more help with this,
I'd update both the kernel (if needed, for nl80211 support) and
wpa_supplicant first.
