It indicates that the Association Request frame sent by the station
could not be parsed successfully, i.e., most likely, there was an
invalid information element in it.

Well, I would disagree with that conclusion. Anyway, AP configuration
changes won't help with this - you would need to modify the source code
to allow invalid frames..
Would it be possible for you to capture that Association Request frame
with a sniffer (say, tcpdump or wireshark)? It would be interesting to
see what exactly was wrong with it.
