wpa_supplicant is run in the station side.  Authenticator is used in the 
AP side.  No patches should be needed.  But you may consider using 
compat-wireless if you want the latest drivers.  It requires at least 
Linux 2.6.24.

That's for the drivers that don't support WPA.  But most driver do.
