wpa_supplicant iwl3945 adhoc WEP

Hi,

 I'm quite happy with wpa_supplicant in normal WPA managed modes, but
 can not make my adhoc network work.
 I can see the network in the scan results but it seems like
 wpa_supplicant doesn't try to connect, in iwconfig I can see that it
 doesn't even change to ad-hoc mode, although I specified mode=1.
 Using iwconfig manually succeeds after first setting ad-hoc mode.
 Is there any valuable info I could provide?

 wpa_supplicant v0.6.9 and kernel 2.6.33.3
