I don't see how the timing has any impact on the standardisation. You're
already shipping forked versions of almost everything, so implementing a
standard API in a fork while upstreaming it won't hurt anyone. And if
during the upstreaming you need to make changes, either those point out
bugs or issues that you want to fix in the product _anyway_, or they
don't matter for the product, but since that's a fork already...
Since you're forking anyway, why not fork with standard commands rather
than private commands?
