I tried setting channel and hw_mode:
interface=wlan0
driver=nl80211
ssid=test
channel=1
hw_mode=g
ieee80211n=1
But then I get:
Configuration file: hostapd.conf
Opening raw packet socket for ifindex 1208054188
BSS count 1, BSSID mask ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff (0 bits)
SIOCGIWRANGE: WE(compiled)=22 WE(source)=21 enc_capa=0xf
nl80211: Added 802.11b mode based on 802.11g information

Mode: IEEE 802.11g Channel: 1 Frequency: 2412 MHz
Could not set channel for kernel driver
wlan0: Unable to setup interface.
The behavior is still the same as when I didn't have channel and hw_mode in
hostapd.conf:
# iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
eth1 no wireless extensions.
wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

ESSID is still blank and stations are still unable to see the ap.
