bridge_packets in hostapd

Hello,
 I have a question regarding hostapd.conf:

it says there, when explaining about the bridge_packets entry:
...
...
# When IEEE 802.11 is used in managed mode, packets are usually send through
# the AP even if they are from a wireless station to another wireless station.

I need some clarification here:
How can two wireless stations communicate **not** through the AP when
in managed mode
(assuming there is no wired connection between them)?

Or does it mean:
...
# When IEEE 802.11 is used in managed mode, packets are usually send through
# the AP even if they are from a wireless station to another wireless
station and these
stations has a wired connection also.

Did I miss something here?
