That sounds complete and assuming people are fine adding new
functionality into Linux wireless extensions (that's assuming quite a
lot, but well..) this would be the preferred way of implementing the
support. Since the PS3 driver specific differences are minimal, it
should not require a new driver wrapper in wpa_supplicant. These changes
are not really PS3 specific since similar design could be used by other
drivers, too (and is already used by some non-Linux WLAN drivers).

Anyway, I'm also open to integrating the patch with a separate PS3
driver wrapper as a temporary solution if there are problems in getting
a generic interface included in the kernel.
