Orinoco Gold Card (Hermes) as AP under Debian Etch?

I've googled and filtered the list regarding my attempt to use a Lucent
(Orinoco) Gold 802.11b card as Ap under Debian Etch. The card is in a
Vadem-469 ISA bridge and I can get the hardware recognized but only
using the orinoco_cs module.

However (as has been noted by others), it will not accept the command to
switch to Master mode.
root at cpq400:~# iwconfig eth1 mode master

Am I attempting the impossible with this combination? If not, can
someone perhaps offer a clue as to which modules are appropriate to have
this card operate as an AP?
I have booted with out the orinoco_cs/orinoco modules and tried a
variety of other modules but without the orinoco_cs, iwconfig doesn't
even recognize it's there.
dmesg shows this when the module is loaded:
