Do you just want to be able to test the EAP authentication part or the
full wireless setup? EAP methods can be tested with
wpa_supplicant/hostapd driver_test "emulation" that does not require any
wireless hardware.

Are you talking about the Host AP driver or hostapd? Host AP driver
supports only Prism2/2.5/3-based cards in AP mode. hostapd can also be
used with some other drivers (madwifi, d80211 (the drivers that support
AP mode, like dadwifi), BSD). I don't know whether there are any USB
adapters that would support AP mode with any of the supported drivers.

It should be possible to use a client and AP in the same host if you
have multiple wireless adapters.
