wpa_supplicant roaming setup: ifup on boot?

Hello,
I'm running wpa_supplicant with the madwifi-driver on a laptop with
debian etch, configured in roaming mode as described in readme.modes.

I installed ifplugd and configured ath0 as a hotplug-device.

Now I want to have ath0 enabled when I boot my system and the
pcmcia-card is inserted. 
Perhaps I missed something while reading the docs, but is it possible
to activate ath0 on boot?

I wrote now a small script which greps lsmod for ath_pci and enables
ath0, but I do not find this solution very smart ;)
