Association failures with wpa_supplicant

I have an ipw2100 card in my laptop, attempting to associate to a WAP54G
that uses WPA2, using wpa_supplicant. Sometimes it works, sometimes it
just gets stuck in a cycle doing:

  <2>Trying to associate with 00:06:25:49:c4:05 (SSID='leoair' freq=0 MHz)
  <2>Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out.
  <2>Trying to associate with 00:06:25:49:c4:05 (SSID='leoair' freq=0 MHz)
  <2>Authentication with 00:00:00:00:00:00 timed out.

I haven't yet been able to identify any property of the times it works
verses the times it doesn't. I never change any settings on the AP, I am
(to my knowledge) the only user of the AP. If it's not working, it often
helps just to

  ifdown wireless
  pkill wpa_supplicant
  ifup wireless

and it will start to work.

I've no idea where to start looking for this problem - is it part of
wpa_supplicant, or the lower 802.11b layer in the ipw2100 driver itself,
or the AP, or where?
