The fact that the card works "fine" with the orinoco driver strongly
suggests that your card is fine, and you've got some issue either with
the hostap driver as 'shipped' by your distro, or in your compilation
environment, or have some "conflict" that is tying up a resource needed
by the card, such that it is unable to respond to the hostap driver (or
respond in a timely manner.)
