I installed Ethereal and opened my dump file. This is most interesting:

There is an Association Response frame from the AP to the handheld that has 
status code 0x0012. Ethereal says that means that association was denied 
because the station doesn't support all required datarates. I'm willing to 
bet the AP is set to 'G only' somewhere on it's configuration pages. 
Unfortunately, ATM I cannot remember the admin password (and my usual 
suspects don't work) so it's going to have to wait.
