CLI apps: How should they "logoff" or "disconnect" a connection?

Hi,

When a cli type app is finished, how best to end the currently
established network connection via the wpa_supplicant so that the cli
can be later run again and begin another network connection attempt
(to same -or different- network)?

IE. how to return end the supplicant's current "state" and put it into
a state of readiness to start any new connection attempt freshly?
