No, that is not needed. You can just use the ASCII passphrase in
wpa_supplicant.conf. wpa_passphrase is only used to avoid running the
PSK derivation every time the configuration is loaded (it is relatively
CPU intensive process, but it does not take much time with modern
laptop/desktop computers). See the example wpa_supplicant.conf for more
details on how the ASCII passphrase can be configured.
