hostap wifi0 exists, wlan0 unknown interface

We have a unique sitiuation where we see the wifi0 device, but any
reference to wlan0 returns unknown interface.  The
/proc/net/hostap/wlan0 directory exists, and the debug file shows data. 
Reboots do not fix.

Anyone know why this would happen?   Running on a Soekris 4511 with
2.4.20 / hostap 0.2.4
