With no WPA, the station logs this when the master disappears:

With WPA turned on, the station doesn't seem to get those notifications
from the firmware (?).
I've tried STA 1.7.4, 1.8.0 and 1.8.4 and none of them report that the
access point is out of range when using WPA. Additionally, the link status
shows up as 0 when the client is connected:
Link Quality=0/70 Signal level=-55 dBm Noise level=-10 dBm
The signal level and noise level don't seem to be updated on the station
side. They are properly updated on the master in
/proc/net/hostap/wlan0/00:xxxxx.
