DWL-650 rev P prism2_srec input/output error loading firmware

I've been trying for a long time to get one of my wireless cards
working. A Dlink DWL-650 Rev. P1 (prism3) pcmcia card.
gentoo system 2.6.11r3 & 2.6.12r6 - same results on either kernel
intel p4 3.06ghz
cardctl ident recognizes it
pcmcia-cs loads the correct (hostap-cs) modules when inserted.
prism2_srec gives me an input/output error when trying to load any
firmware into the card.
