Can not control wireless driver after leaving wpa_supplicant

Reboot is a bit heavy workaround for this.. Are you setting the
network interface (most often ath0) up after wpa_supplicant has exited?
Could you please list the commands you have tried after killing
wpa_supplicant? Please alsoninclude their output.
