Unable to put WCF12 card into master mode

I've reached a solution.  Even though the output of iwconfig wlan0, suggested
the correct essid, I hadn't actually set it.  That is, I left the default
'any'.  You CAN'T set master mode before first saying:

iwconfig wlan0 essid my_essid
