520 revision E fails to bring up wlan0

I have the DWL-520 revision E wireless card. Its the card that
requires a firmware download at every boot I understand. I have gotten
it to work in Windows. I was trying to follow the directions at:
http://home.columbus.rr.com/andrewbarr/dwl520e1.html
...but modprobe does not bring up wlan0 so I don't even get the chance
to install the firmware using hostap_fw_load.
I use Gentoo and I installed the 0.2.4 drivers and utils.
