wlan0 hostap problems

     Hello,

I have 2 Soekris machines running Pebble Linux, both
with Senao 2511 pcmcia radio, and hostap driver in
ad-hoc mode. In /etc/network/interfaces I have the
line
up iwconfig wlan0 essid subnet1 channel 10 mode
ad-hoc rate 11M (the #auto wlan0 line is commented)

After booting, iwconfig wlan0 gives the following:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11B ESSID:"subnet1"
      Mode:Ad-Hoc Frequency 2.457GHz Cell:
02:02:72:23:45:D6
      Bit Rate=11Mb/s Sensitivity=1/0
      retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
      Encryption key:off
      Power Management:off
Link Quality:92/0 Signal level:-40 dBm Noise
level:-98 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx
invalid frag:0
      Tx excessive retries:437 Invalid misc:7135
Missed Beacon:0

   ifconfig gives:
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr:00:02:6F:33:45:D6
      inet addr:192.168.0.83 Bcast:192.168.0.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
(The output for the 2nd machine is very similar.)

   My Problems:
1. In both machines the command 'iwlist wlan0 scan'
does not recognize the other machine. However, they
both do recognize a Windows 2000 computer who has a
smartBridges company AirNic radio, and it recognizes
them!
2. ping to the recognized computer or from it fails.
3. Both machines can ping each other on the wlan0 IP,
but it seems that this goes through the wired LAN.

Have I omitted any configuration or command ?
Help will be very greatly appreciated. Thanks in
advance,
   Shaul
