Please also remove madwifi modules from other subdirectories under
/lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default if you have installed another version
before. The syslog excerpt showed something being loaded from
/lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/extra with mismatch in version..

Nowadays, you will also need to load rate control algorithm as a kernel
module (ath_rate/onoe/ath_rate_onoe.ko).
PS.
madwifi driver has its own mailing lists.. This does not really have
anything to do with Host AP drivers or hostapd/wpa_supplicant..
