hostapd_sta

I would like to find out some details about using hostapd_sta=1 and wlan#sta. 
Does this mean that 802.1x is only used for the wlan#sta interface? Does this 
mean that hostap can accept unauthenticated clients via the wlan# interface 
if I don't set a pre-shared key  while accepting authenticated clients with 
802.1x configured via the wlan#sta interface?
