How to get the link status when hostap driver is in managed mode

When doing own scripts in host which is in Managed mode, it is sometimes 
needed to know if the link between the ap and the client is OK.

Where you can easily see if the host currently associated and 
authenticated with AP. Can wireless tools directly offer that kind of 
information? At least the hostap driver knows when the link is ok. But 
how to get that information out. Doing "ping to_to_the_ap" is not so 
nice way to do it.
