Power management: how to test it?

Hello,
I have problems in setting up power saving mode.
I do a:
iwconfig wlan0 power value X (X= 500m, 1, 2, 10 tried in sequence)
iwconfig wlan0 power timeout Y (Y=500m, 1, 2, 10)
iwconfig wlan0 power on
Making a iwconfig wlan0 now shows the value X in the field "Power management".
The card is in managed mode and associated with the AP.
Now, I ping the (supposedly) sleeping station. An ethereal capture shows
that pings (ICMP echo request and replies) go forth and back, but no PS-Poll
frames are sent, nor the "sleeping" station ever sets the Pwr Mgt bit in
the frame control. It's like power saving mode is not there.
I guess I made a mistake, but I don't know if in the setup or in the testing.
Is the "ping" a valid test to see power saving mode at work? If not, how
could I do?
Another "strange" thing I got is that if I type:
iwconfig wlan0 power multicast (as "man iwconfig" says)
I get an error, something like "wrong parameter", while everything is ok
if I swap "multicast" with "unicast" or "all". I guess that this is a problem
related to wireless extensions, but I am not sure at all.
Any hint/clue?
My setup:
kernel 2.4.22, hostap driver and utils 0.1.2, wireless extensions 15, wireless
tools 26, card Prism2.5 with f/w 1.0.7/1.3.5
Thanks,
/Giorgio
