low throughput with hostap driver and wpa_supplicant

I seem to be suffering very poor throughput using hostap 0.2.4 and
wpa_supplicant from the 0.2 stable branch. Using the Fedora FC3 2.6.8-
1.526 kernel currently.
iwconfig shows:
$ iwconfig wlan0
wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"ilinx" Nickname:"brian-laptop"
Mode:Managed Access Point: 00:04:E2:B2:C9:52 Bit Rate:11Mb/s
Sensitivity=1/3
Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=51/70 Signal level=-38 dBm Noise level=-89 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:22 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:27 Invalid misc:1909 Missed beacon:0
so the "rate" seems to be 11Mb/s, but an actual throughput test shows:
$ ttcp -f m -t -s pc
ttcp-t: buflen=8192, nbuf=2048, align=16384/0, port=5001 tcp -> pc
ttcp-t: socket
ttcp-t: connect
ttcp-t: 16777216 bytes in 44.40 real seconds = 2.88 Mbit/sec +++
ttcp-t: 2048 I/O calls, msec/call = 22.20, calls/sec = 46.13
ttcp-t: 0.0user 0.6sys 0:44real 1% 0i+0d 0maxrss 0+2pf 443+2csw
this is over an AP (SMC) to a 100Mb/s network.
Any ideas what the problem is or how to further debug?
