retry behavior

Hi,
   I have two laptops right next to each other communicating in ad-hoc 
mode. By setting the retry limit to 0 on one of the cards, I get almost 
10% packet loss for a udp stream compared to only 0.11% packet loss with 
retry limit set to 1. 

   One would expect that the reliability increases two fold because its 
one more retransmission, but what i am seeing is almost a 100% 
improvement!!! 
  
   Any insight into this would be great!
