More info.  This warning:

is new.  It appeared sometime between test6-mm1 and test9-mm3.  So, I
guess its not all that surprising that I am the first to find it.
Since it hasn't bitten me yet, I'm simply going to disable it for now;
but that doesn't explain why xsupplicant isn't working.  More digging
to follow...
