Hostapd problems

Hello.

I have a small AP network made with a couple of 
Netgear Ma311 pci cards ( firmware 1.7.4 )
and a generic pcmcia prism 2.5 based card (same
firmware).

Access point services and bridging work fine, but 
I cannot use hostapd.
If I use it, the wds link between the AP machines does
not come up easily and bridging fails as well.

I have 2 questions:

1) What is the proper sequence for loading hostapd 
   (i.e. load modules, then hostapd, then wds links, 
    then bridging...)

2) If I cannot use hostapd, what else can I use to
    implement  802.11x / radius authentication ?
