hostapd interactive front-end mode? Other newbie questions.

I'm a new user and just set this up the other day. Cool stuff.
I have a few questions:

1. Has anyone ever done a front-end for hostapd that pops up an X window
whenever a new mac address tries to attach?

I'm thinking this would be useful for my home where I generally want anyone to
be able to walk in and start using my wireless, but don't want somebody
outside to be able to do so without knowing about it.

I'm thinking it would store these mac addresses permanently or perhaps with
some expiration time, so I would only be prompted when a new mac address
    appeared.

2. In a similar vein, are there X monitoring tools that show the currently
    attached stations?

3. Is it possible to run things like airsnort to show the wireless frames on
the same card as hostap while it's actively handling traffic? Or does it
have to put the card in a special mode that precludes normal operation?

4. I have a LInksys PCI card and I'm under the impression it's possible to
fiddle with the broadcast power of this card. I'm curious how to do that
with the iw commands. I'm also interested in hooking up a bigger antenna,
the card is in the back of a building and I want to reach the park in the
front of my building. If I run a 20' cable to the front that's bad? Am I
better off putting the antenna in the back?
