Problems setting up hostap on ipaq with DWL-650

Hi,

I'm trying to set up hostap on my ipaq (36xx running familiar if anyone 
cares :) with a D-Link DWL-650.

The card is intialised fine, and I can use it in managed mode. However 
after I say:

iwconfig wlan0 essid "familiar"
iwconfig wlan0 channel 2
iwconfig wlan0 mode Master
ifconfig wlan0 192.168.255.1

I start hitting problems. No node can connect to the "ap", the netgear 
site monitor reports that the ap exists, but the orinoco one doesn't.

I have never upgraded the firmware on this card.

Could you suggest what the problem might be?
