Upload firmware while AP active?

I have been playing around with the (to me) must frustrating part of the 
whole Prism2 experience, getting the right firmware onto the right card.

Safety first: I have a HEX file that I would like to load onto a card 
running hostap.  As soon as I insert the card the PCMCIA routines start 
Hostap.

So I'm wondering: is it safe at that point to upload the firmware onto 
the card (using the "stay in RAM" type of firmware) while it's running?
