Setting of WEP keys from software

I'm trying to write code that changes a WEP key in the hostap driver.
If I just call the local->crypt->ops->set_key functions it does not work,
probably because the driver is set to use non-host based encryption.
Which is the 'correct' way of changing a key so that both host based and non
host-based encryption works?
(Remember: I'm trying to do this from software...)
