Laptop locks-up when card inserted

HI,

In my attempt to get hostap working, I installed the source package, 
compiled it, and (as far as I can tell) followed the installation 
instructions.

I noticed no errors and all the modules were created and moved into the 
modules directory.

When I insert the card, the modules load and then my laptop locks-up real 
hard. Nothing can be done but to power it down.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

SPEC: Debian unstable, 2.4.19-686/2.4.20-686, Compaq Armada E500, Compaq 
WL100
